Snowfall blocks Quetta-Karachi highway

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 - Mastung—Heavy snowfall on Monday morning has caused closure of road for traffic on Quetta-Karachi highway in Mastung. Karachi and Quetta bound traffic remained suspend for a time near Lakpass Tunnel and some other points in Mastung districts when snowfall started which continued lashing over one hour. However, personnel of National Highway and other relevant departments had cleared the road. Traffic police has warned drivers to keep speed of their vehicles slow as road is covered with snow.

Snowfall in Mastung made farmer community happy as it would cause improving sub-soil water level besides make dried karez function. It would also benefit our fruit gardens and crops, a peasant Zaman Khan said. Meanwhile, it is reported that the provincial capital and outskirts received snowfall on Monday morning. Snowfall started lashing on city at about 8am and remained continues for one hour.

Earth, roads and floors of the houses have worn white sheet of snowfall and entire city is presenting white look, Ayaz, a citizen said. Quetta will experience horrible biting chilled weather if wind start blowing after snowfall, another citizen Munir said. People were looked enjoying snowfall. However, it may cause some problems due to very dilapidated sewerage system and roads conditions of the city.

Meanwhile, it is reported from Muzaffarabad that Weekly trans-LoC bus service, operating between Muzaffarabad and Srinagar was resumed on Monday after remaining suspend for two weeks due to severe weather conditions. Official sources told APP that the service might be suspended again if there was a fresh spell of snowfall or avalanches experienced on the traditional historic route. The bus service was canceled on January 16 and 23 due to heavy snowfall and avalanches at various sites at both sides of the LoC.
