ISLAMABAD – President Dr Arif Alvi on Thursday said the general elections will be held in Pakistan on February 8, 2024.

Alvi announced the election date after meeting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja where the two agreed that the general elections could be on February 8, 2024.

A statement issued by President’s office said a delegation of electoral watchdog led by chief election commissioner and the Attorney General met Alvi at the President’s Secretariat to decide the election date.

It was [then] unanimously decided that the election will be held on Thursday, February 8, the handout said.

The development comes as the Supreme Court directed CEC to consult with the president and inform the court about the election date on Friday.

The apex court directed the Attorney General to arrange the meeting between the ECP and the President, providing the president with the court order, and be available to render assistance.

Top political parties including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) welcomed ECP’s announcement that elections in the country will take place in February next year.
