ISLAMABAD – A National Security Committee (NSC) meeting is underway, days after Pakistan carried out strikes in Iran targeting hideouts used by Baloch militants.
Pakistan’s interim PM Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar is chairing an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Committee on National Security in the wave of retaliatory bombing between the two sides.
Earlier, PM Kakar cut short his meeting at Davos where he attended the World Economic Forum (WEF).
Interim cabinet members, Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir, and members of the interim federal cabinet are present in the meeting.
The country’s top civil-military administration gathered to discuss Pakistan-Iran situation, and security matters ahead of general elections.
NSC members will review national security as Islamabad and Tehran had to navigate tensions along their volatile border.
After Iran violated Pakistani airspace, Islamabad strongly condemned the move and downgraded diplomatic ties. Pakistan also recalled its ambassador from Iran and expelled the Iranian envoy.
In response to strikes, Pakistan conducted precise airstrikes in Iran using various weapons, including drones, rockets, and stand-off weapons.
After the strikes, Iran summoned Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires to express its protest against the attack.
