Man who vandalised Ranjit Singh statue gets bail

A local court on Friday granted bail to a member of banned political party who allegedly vandalized the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

The accused who was identified as Rizwan from Mandi Bahauddin and was arrested on Tuesday last was produced in the court on Friday.

During the court proceedings, the investigation officer asked the court whether there was any objection to sending the accused on judicial remand.

Meanwhile, the accused’s lawyer told the court the police have completed their investigation and have recovered a hammer from Rizwan.

Rizwan’s lawyer also appealed to the court that the provisions under which FIR was registered were bailable and requested the court to grant bail to his client. The magistrate, declaring the offence as bailable, granted bail to the accused against surety bonds of Rs50,000.

This is the third time the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh has been vandalized since 2019, first act of vandalism took place when two men struck it with wooden rods. Second time in 2020, a man broke off one arm of the statue.
