KARACHI – Pakistan’s power demand is growing at full pace and is a challenge for government despite shift to solar power as there is huge generation gap, especially in summer. Federal and provincial governments are also chalking out new strategies to fill the gap while cost of electricity production is at all time high.
As people are bearing brunt of record fuel prices, Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah announced to offer free electricity to consumers using up to 100 units.
The government will provide this free power from solar parks and mini grid stations, minister announced, as PPP led government in Sindh has eamaked five billion rupees for the much needed project.
‘Free Electricity in Sindh’
Under the government’s plan, a scheme will be introduced to provide solar panels at a highly discounted price, especially those who are underprivileged and using less electricity.
In another positive development, Sindh government has decided to distribute 200,000 solar panels to poor and lower-class individuals, with the government covering major chunk of the panel’s cost and people will be paying mere 20 percent.
This initiative aims to address the lack of power supply in around five lakh houses in Sindh, with plans to install solar parks and mini-grid stations in Karachi and other parts of the province.
