ISLAMABAD – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is likely to increase the electricity price by Rs3.49 per unit for one month on account of fuel cost adjustment.

The regulatory authority will today hear the application filed by the Central Power Purchasing Authority (CPPA).

CPPA has filed a request seeking fuel cost adjustment for the month of April. It would put an additional burden of Rs34 billion on consumers if approved.

The request states that electricity was not generated from furnace oil and diesel in April. Electricity generation from hydel remained at 22.96% during the month, while local coal contributed 10.19% in April.

Electricity generation from local gas was 11.28%, and from imported LNG was 24.97% in April. Nuclear fuel contributed 23.64% to electricity generation during the same month.

Meanwhile, the petrol prices may go down on June 1, the sources familiar with the development said on Wednesday.

The petrol and diesel prices may decrease by approximately Rs6.50 to Rs7.50, they said.

The sources also said that in the past 15 days, the global market prices for petrol and diesel decreased by 3.25 dollars and 2.10 dollars per barrel respectively, while in the previous 15 days, the prices had dropped by 8.7 dollars and 4.3 dollars per barrel.

Currently, the price of petrol is Rs273.10  per liter and diesel is available at Rs274.08  per liter.
