The Lahore High Court on Tuesday rejected the Punjab government plea not to give jobs to disabled persons.

A two-member bench of the LHC, comprising Justice Suhail Nasir and Justice Ahmad Nadeem Arshad heard a case pertaining to giving a teacher’s job to a blind man in Lahore. The teacher got justice after three years.

Justice Nasir remarked that disabled persons were being given the best facilities all over the world. “It’s very painful that the government is denying teaching jobs to the visually or physically impaired persons,” he added.

The justice further remarked: “Physical impairment is natural, it’s not in the hands of a man.

It is the responsibility of the state to provide equal opportunities of work to the disabled persons and make them compete with all other normal people.”

Karman Jamil passed the exam and interview for the post of a teacher in 2019 but he was not given the appointment letter.

The court had three times issued order to the concerned education department for his appointment.

In its judgment, the court ruled that the state could not deny the fundamental constitutional rights of physically impaired persons.

It is the responsibility of the state to take measures to remove any sense of deprivation from the minds of disabled people.

Citing different cases, the LHC judge said that visually impaired Yousaf Salim was appointed in the judicial service in 2018, the federal government appointed a blind woman, Saima Salim.

He also gave examples of world renowned blind speaker and writer Hellen Keller, blind athlete Tofiri Kibuuka, and blind painter Esraf Armagan.

LHC Justice Suhail Nasir and Justice Arshad issued a judgment on the intra court appeal of the Punjab government.
