Prices of various edible items, including sugar, has registered upward trend after the government imposed various taxes in the budget for fiscal year 2024-25.

The federal government tabled the tax-heavy budget on June 12 in line with the conditions laid forth by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for approving another bailout package for the cash-strapped country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also admitted that the budget for the new fiscal year was prepared under the watch of the global lender.

The budget, which was enforced on July 1, has started serving blows to masses as prices of edible commodities have seen spike in both wholesale and retail markets.

The budget has also led to an increase in the sugar prices in both markets across the country, putting an additional burden on public.

The price of 50-kg bag in wholesale market has seen an increase of Rs250 to Rs6,950 as compared to previous rate of Rs6,700 per bag. The per kg wholesale price of sugar now stands at Rs139.
