Sindh government has voiced concerns over the removal of the iconic Mohenjo Daro image from the Rs 20 currency note, urging the State Bank of Pakistan to reconsider the decision. In a formal letter addressed to the central bank’s governor, Sindh’s Culture and Tourism Minister, Zulfiqar Ali Shah, highlighted the cultural and historical significance of the ancient site, which had previously been featured on the currency.

Mohenjo Daro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a 5,000-year-old symbol of Pakistan’s rich history, was first displayed on the Rs 10 note in 1970 and later moved to the Rs 20 note. The recent decision to replace its image with that of Bab-e-Khyber on the new Rs 20 currency has sparked concern from the provincial government. In his letter, the minister underscored the importance of preserving the presence of Mohenjo Daro on the nation’s currency, calling it a matter of national pride.

He further stated that removing the site from the notes could send an unfavorable message regarding the recognition of Pakistan’s cultural heritage. Shah urged the central bank to reconsider the matter, emphasizing the importance of maintaining Mohenjo Daro’s status on the currency for future generations.
