RAWALPINDI – Authorities extended school holidays in Rawalpindi until November 24, 2024 in the wake of worsening smog conditions and the alarming rise in air pollution levels in the region.
The decision was implemented as AQI (Air Quality Index) reached hazardous levels, with reports indicating an AQI of 500 in some areas of the city.
The extended closure comes after government declared a week-long break earlier this month, which has now been extended as smog continues to pose a significant health risk for students. The environmental crisis also prompted local authorities to take proactive measures to safeguard students and staff from the dangerous levels of air pollution.

In a statement, officials urged schools to implement online classes during this period to ensure that academic schedules are not significantly disrupted.
Authorities also issued a stern warning to educational institutions. In a follow-up directive, the government stated that a crackdown would begin if schools do not comply with the online classes mandate during the closure. Schools failing to make the necessary arrangements could face penalties.
Punjab government urged masses to stay indoors as much as possible and to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities until air quality improves. Meanwhile, the authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will review the status of schools and the overall smog condition by November 24.
