Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab met with a delegation from Pakistan Steel Mill at the Chairman Secretariat in Karsaz to discuss critical issues surrounding water supply to residential areas of the Steel Mill, including Steel Town, Gulshan-e-Hadid Phase 1, Phase 2, and Extension Phase 3.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad, KW&SC COO Engineer Asadullah Khan, MPA Sajid Jokhio, and various other officials and local representatives.
The Pakistan Steel Mill management expressed interest in transferring its water system to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC), a move KW&SC officials supported, with the condition that the entire water system, including the Zero Point Steel Canal and Filter Plant, be handed over. KW&SC assured that it would manage water supply to these residential areas if given full control. Additionally, KW&SC raised the issue of outstanding dues, demanding Pakistan Steel Mill clear arrears of Rs 11 billion, which KWSC requires to fulfill payments owed to retired employees. Pakistan Steel Mill officials stated they would seek approval from the board before responding to the demand.
A KW&SC spokesperson clarified that until an official agreement is reached, Pakistan Steel Mill will remain responsible for water distribution in Steel Town, Gulshan-e-Hadid, and related areas, as these regions fall outside KW&SC’s jurisdiction under the 2023 KW&SC Act.
This law designates Pakistan Steel Mill, as a constitutional entity, as the governing authority for these areas. Despite jurisdiction limitations, KW&SC confirmed it continues to supply bulk water to Pakistan Steel Mill through the Karachi Gujjo Canal, ensuring an uninterrupted water flow to the facility.
