Karachi Boat Club (KBC) female rowers make Pakistan proud as they bagged the silver medal in the Grand Moscow Regatta on June 1. They finished second behind a Russian club.

The team had left for the event on May 27, it was also the first time that they were competing in the Moscow Grand Regatta.

The six-member squad returned on June 5 after the event where they faced competitors from seven countries including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan in the women quad event, Cuba, hosts Russia, Belarus, and Serbia.

The rowers participated in the seniors, Under 23, Under 19, students, club teams, and para rowing categories, with race events of men and women singles, pairs, quads, fours, and eights.

The regatta was featuring 2,222 rowers. The Pakistani girls who won the silver medal included Syeda Manahil Hussain, Aaleen Hussain, Mariam Yousuf Ali and Nehan Asad.

Among men’s events Muhammad Danish Iftikhar and Imran Khan represented Pakistan. KBC sent this team after much effort and the representation at the Grand Moscow Regatta would also not have been possible without the wonderful support from the Russian Friendship House and the Russian Consulate and their collaboration with the Karachi Boat Club, a press statement added.

Karachi Boat Club, established in 1881, has been a long-standing rowing club in Karachi that develops student rowers from schools, colleges and universities and has prepared and sent many athletes to compete in international events. The club has a fleet of 33 boats, more than 500 active rowing members and more than 25 registered schools, along with internationally trained and certified coaches.

KBC has also hosted international teams for events in Karachi as well on multiple occasions.—Agencies
