LAHORE – Army and Rangers’s deployment has been sought by Punjab government for security of Muharram.

The government of Punjab requested assistance from Pakistan Army and Rangers to ensure peace and security during Muharram – as mourning processions used to be taken countrywide.

Punjab Home Department spokesperson said law enforcement agencies will work together to maintain a peaceful observance of holy month.

The provincial government asked for deployment of 150 contingents of the Army and Rangers across different districts, based on specific requirements.

This request was made in response to a letter from Punjab Police seeking additional security measures from the 1st to the 12th of Muharram.

The region has seen heightened security concerns, particularly during Muharram processions, due to past incidents, including a significant bombing in Karachi in 2009.

Pakistan witnessed surge in terror attacks especially during religious gatherings in recent years, and the civil-military authorities are taking stern measures to ensure foolproof security.
