Pakistan’s premier batter Babar Azam has found an unexpected supporter in Mohammad Amir during his ongoing captaincy saga.
Amir and Babar have had a frosty relationship in recent years so his support for the 28-year-old comes as a surprise to many.
It’s high time that the board should announce the captain with only three to four months left in the World Cup, Amir was quoted as saying on his official YouTube channel.
The pacer argued that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will be making a mistake if they replace Babar with the ODI World Cup on the horizon.
There is no reason to change the captain at this point. It doesn’t make any sense. So, it’s better to officially name Babar Azam [as Pakistan captain] just like PCB announced the head coach, he added.
PCB is yet to officially announce Babar Azam as the captain of the national side for the upcoming Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup which will take place later this year. However, there is little doubt in cricketing circles that anyone other than the no1 ODI batter in the world will take the reins of the national side.
His likely replacements -Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi or even Shan Masood- are much too green at the international level.
With Amir also coming to the aid of Babar Azam, it may even open doors for his potential return to the national team.
