ISLAMABAD – At least three individuals have been held as over multiple cases have been filed in connection with fires in Margalla Hills.
The fire extinguishing efforts are ongoing, Islamabad Chief Commissioner confirmed to local media as authorities are probing the inferno. CDA officials emphasized the commitment to holding all responsible parties accountable to protect the hills.
CDA’s environment wing apprehended the suspects at a location where a fire had previously occurred and handed them over to Islamabad police. Islaambad police also increased patrolling in the Margalla Hills as directed by the chairman.
Margalla Hills National Park saw another fire incident on Friday, the latest blaze started near Kalenjar village, and spreads across the mountainous region.
Huge smoke clouds and flames were captured on camera. The fire started near Ghandian Kalanger area and in front of the E-9 hills. This is the latest in a series of fires in the area, following incidents earlier this week on Trail 3, Trail 5, and in Sector E-11.
Meanwhile, fire fighters, CDA officials rushed to the scene to douse the fire. Cliops captured by citizens showed smoke rising from the Margalla Hills, prompting concerns about the safety of the wildlife.
Over a dozen fire incidents were reported this week; two fire incidents were reported in the Chiran Di Gali and Saidpur areas of the hills. Firefighters and three choppers from defence authorities and Prime Minister’s Office took around seven hours to control the flames.
Margalla Hills National Park covers 12,605 hectares and is managed by Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB).
Margalla Hills continue to see dangerous fire season, often triggered by heatwaves. The year 2024 saw unprecedented frequency and intensity of fires. Several factors contribute to these recurring fires: climate change has created drier conditions conducive to fires, and human negligence.
