LAHORE – Lahore continued to lead the list of the most polluted cities of the world with Air Quality Index reaching hazardous level on Monday evening.

At 5;40 pm, AQI of Lahore was recorded 305, the highest in the world.

India capital Delhi remained on the second spot with AQI 270 followed by Karachi where AQI was recorded 214.

According to iqair.com, Bosnia Herzegovina’s capital Sarajevo and Vietnam’s Hanoi remained on third and fourth place with AQI 177 and 171 respectively.

AQI at Lahore College for Women University was recorded at 420 at 9 am, 341 at Punjab University at 12 at noon, 295 at PCSIR Muslim Town Complex at 3 pm and 250 at Punjab University at 4 pm.

The AQI is calculated based on five categories of pollution: ground-level ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.

Medical experts have suggested taking necessary measures for avoiding smog related hazards.

“Avoid going outdoors unnecessarily. If unavoidable, wear glasses and masks while going outdoors. Wash hands, face and eyes on returning indoors. Extra care should be given to elderly people and children”, said Dr Abdul Rauf, a family physician running clinic at Usman Gunj, a congested locality in Northern Lahore.
