ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) Wednesday unveiled a new PhD admission policy, setting BS degree or equivalent as minimum criteria education to apply for a PhD program.

Earlier, students were required to have MS and Mphil degrees after completing their 16 years of education to get admission in doctoral-level studies but the condition now has been abolished.

HEC Chairman Tariq Banuri announced that the new policy will be effective from January 1, 2021.

Already enrolled PhD students could get benefit from sections of the policy, as it will not be fully applicable to them.

Furthermore, the top regulatory body for the first time in the history of Pakistan has withdrawn the requirement for students to pursue a PhD only in their own discipline.

Under the new policy, PhD scholars will not be allowed to leave the home country for a period of at least two years.

The HEC also announced that a requirement to send the PhD dissertations to foreign academicians for their review will also be removed, allowing students to send their theses to local experts.
