In a major medical breakthrough for Pakistan, the global access to catheter-based treatment of Acute Ischemic Stroke called Mechanical Thrombectomy was emphasized on World Stroke Day in liaison with USA based society SVIN (Society of vascular and interventional neurology) at Lahore General Hospital, Lahore.
Vice Chancellor University of Health Sciences Prof-Dr Javed Akram and Principal Postgraduate Medical Institute Prof-Dr Sardar Muhammad Al-freed Zafar expressed concern over the rapid rise in stroke in Pakistan and talked about its reasons.
In order to address the root causes of this disease, it is necessary to establish a system based on economic and social justice as well as to pay full attention to public awareness so that the rate of diseases like stroke can be minimized, they added. They expressed these views while talking to a workshop and journalists held at Neuro Radiology Department of Lahore General Hospital on the occasion of World Paralysis Day.
Dr Umair Rasheed Chaudhry, Dr. Hashim, Dr Anwar Chaudhry, Dr Saima, Dr Sohail Akhtar, Dr Haseeb Manzoor, Dr Tariq Mian were also present on the occasion.
The PGMI principal, in his talk, said that economic and social problems, class conflict, depression, deprivation and other psychological factors are leading to increase in stroke which has led to high blood pressure and diabetes in people. As a result of which cases of brain hemorrhage have become common and mental and physical disability is increasing rapidly.
Dr. Umair Chaudary and Dr. Saima Ahmad when asked about the implication of this treatment said, “that stroke is a multifaceted disease and problems are multiple, with governmental support and public awareness programs, patients and their families now will no longer to face lifelong paralysis after stroke, because treatment options are now available in Pakistan.”
University of Health Sciences VC Prof. Javed Akram welcomed the convening of the session at Lahore General Hospital in which junior doctors will benefit from the experiences of seniors. Other doctors on the occasion of World Paralysis Day, advised to avoid fast food and use fresh fruits and vegetables.
