Director General of Pakistan Army’s media wing ISPR Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said the plot to kill Chinese engineers in Pakistan was hatched in Afghanistan.
He held a press conference in garrison city of Rawalpindi in which he raised concerns that Afghan soil is being used against Pakistan.
Inter Services Public Relations chief said on March 2 a tragic incident occurred in Bisham, where a suicide bomber targeted a vehicle carrying Chinese engineers working on the Dasu dam, resulting in the deaths of five Chinese nationals and one Pakistani citizen.
He said attack was planned in Afghanistan, with terrorists and their supporters operating from there. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is continuously involved in terrorist activities in Pakistan, leading to significant casualties among security forces and civilians. Pakistan has made considerable efforts for peace in Afghanistan and has been a strong supporter of the country.
Chinese embassy has urged Pakistan to punish those responsible for the attack and ensure the safety of Chinese nationals working in Pakistan. Despite Pakistan’s efforts, the TTP continues to use Afghan soil for attacks in Pakistan, with concrete evidence of their presence there. Pakistan remains committed to eliminating terrorism and protecting its citizens.
Afghan mass repatriation in Pakistan’s favour
Regarding the repatriation of illegal Afghan immigrants, over half a million people have been sent back to Afghanistan, with many still residing in Pakistan. This decision was made considering Pakistan’s economic and security challenges. In response to recent terrorist attacks, Pakistan has conducted operations against terrorist hideouts in Afghanistan, resulting in the elimination of several terrorists.
Surge in Terror Attacks
The recent increase in terrorist activities is attributed to TTP’s support from Afghanistan and the availability of advanced weaponry. Security forces have conducted numerous operations, resulting in the deaths of terrorists and the arrest of suspects.
Delving into details, ISPR chief detailed the Pakistan Army’s vigorous counter-terrorism operations this year alone, with 13,135 operations resulting in the neutralization of 249 terrorists and the arrest of an equal number. However, he solemnly noted the sacrifices made by the armed forces, including the loss of two officers and 60 soldiers since January 2024.
Highlighting strategic measures, the DG informed that Pakistan’s border fencing with Afghanistan and Iran is nearing completion, with 90% and 91% progress respectively.
This initiative aims to enhance border security and curb illegal activities. Chaudhry raised concerns about India’s persistent ceasefire violations and airspace breaches along the eastern border. Despite India’s efforts, Pakistan reaffirmed its unwavering support for Kashmiris and Palestine.
Ban on Twitter/X
Responding to inquiries about the ban on Twitter, Chaudhry emphasized the government’s stance against propaganda and fake news. Regarding the army’s financial contribution, he revealed that army institutions had contributed nearly 100 billion rupees to national tax revenue during the financial year 22-23 which again remains a recorded fact.
DG ISPR reiterated the importance of evidence-based accusations, particularly in matters involving intelligence and judicial affairs. He dismissed rumors of backdoor deals and emphasized the army’s limited role in ensuring secure 8th February elections and economic prosperity.
Addressing concerns about border management effectiveness, Chaudhry acknowledged the inherent challenges. He cited examples like the Mexico-America border wall and stressed the need for mutual cooperation with Afghanistan to combat illegal activities.
In conclusion, Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry’s briefing underscored Pakistan’s commitment to regional stability, counter-terrorism efforts, and diplomatic engagements while addressing pressing domestic and international concerns.
