Commissioner reviews action against illegal profiteering, Rs1.5m fines imposed

Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi chaired a meeting to assess measures against illegal profiteering, where he reviewed recent enforcement actions. The meeting, attended by all Deputy Commissioners, revealed that in the past week, a total of 576 shopkeepers faced action, with fines amounting to Rs 1.52 million imposed.

During the session, Assistant Commissioner for the Commissioner’s Office, Rabia Syed, presented details from the digital data board, outlining violations and enforcement actions taken by Assistant Commissioners.

All Assistant Commissioners updated the Commissioner via video link on their respective enforcement efforts. Commending the efforts of various Assistant Commissioners, the Commissioner emphasized the need for more effective measures against profiteering. He specifically requested explanations from Assistant Commissioners of Ferozabad and Airport for their failure to check prices in certain areas and asked for written clarifications. “Efforts to curb illegal profiteering must be strengthened,” stated Commissioner Naqvi.

He directed all Assistant Commissioners to conduct daily inspections, warning that those who fail to act will be required to provide explanations.

The review detailed actions taken between August 4 and August 10. Fines were imposed across districts as follows: Rs 563,500 in District South, over Rs 200,000 in District East, Rs 32,000 in District West, over Rs 351,000 in District Central, Rs 32,000 in District Malir, Rs 119,000 in Korangi, and Rs 224,000 in Kemari.
