In a significant development, a successful Jirga convened between the Misri Khel tribe of North Waziristan and the Biland Khel tribe of Orakzai resulted in a ceasefire agreement, bringing an end to escalating tensions over a land dispute. The gathering took place under the auspices of neutral mediators at the Tauda China Check Post (CP) yesterday.
The ceasefire agreement follows a recent altercation that left six individuals injured in a conflict near the disputed area adjacent to Tauda China CP Shewa. Acting swiftly under the directives of the District Administration of North Waziristan and Upper Orakzai, Assistant Commissioner Mir Ali Subdivision, Dr. Sadiq Ali, and AC Upper Orakzai, Imtiaz Ali Shah, alongside other officials including Tehsildar Shewa Mr. Kashif, and respective District Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Station House Officers (SHOs), convened a Jirga with elders from both tribes.
After extensive deliberations lasting 4-5 hours, both tribes unanimously agreed upon the following points: Maintenance of Peace: A ceasefire will be observed by both tribes for a period of three months. No Construction: There will be no construction activity in the disputed land until further Jirga sessions are conducted with mediators overseeing the process. Demolition of New Construction: As a gesture of goodwill and commitment to peace, any new construction undertaken in violation of the ceasefire was promptly demolished under the supervision of mediators, with the consent of both tribes.
Enforcement of Agreement: Any violation of the ceasefire agreement will be promptly reported to the concerned district administration and law enforcement agencies, with strict legal action to be taken against the perpetrators. A subsequent Jirga involving both tribes, in consultation with the District Administrations of North Waziristan and Upper Orakzai, is scheduled to take place on April 30, 2024.
