Caretaker Chief Minister Sindh Justice (R) Maqbool Baqar on Wednesday visited Government College University Hyderabad. Chief Minister directed the Commissioner Hyderabad to get the possession of Government College University Hospital to the Government College University Hyderabad. The Chief Minister was briefed on the historical importance of the college that it was established in 1917 before the partition of the subcontinent later it was taken into possession by the Sindh Government on July 21, 1948.
The college was established on 64 acres of land and now only 22 acres of college land was left. Later, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone of the new campus of the college. Moreover, the scholarship cheques worth 2.088 million rupees were distributed among 121 needy students of Sindh University Jamshoro, from the three flood affected districts of the province including Dadu, Qamber-Shahdadkot and Sanghar on Tuesday. The Vice-Chancellor Professor (Meritorious) Dr. Mohammad Siddique Kalhoro handed over these cheques from the students welfare fund, which operates under the university facultys monthly stipend scheme for needy students.
The university spokesperson informed that, for the first time in the universitys history, scholarships have been announced for 20 slots for prospective candidates of the BS (Artificial Intelligence) program for the year 2024. The cheques distribution ceremony took place at the senate hall of the Vice-Chancellors Secretariat. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Siddique Kalhoro distributed cheques among 55 needy students of district Dadu, 40 from Qamber-Shahdadkot and 26 needy students of Sanghar district.
The event was attended by various university officials, including pro-vice-chancellor of the main campus professor Dr. Abdul Sattar Shah, pro-vice-chancellor Laar campus, Badin Professor Dr. Khalil-ur-Rahman Khambhati, Registrar Professor Dr. Mushtaq Ali Jariko, Director institute of english and literature professor Dr. Abdul Fatah Soomro, Director Admissions Professor Dr. Ayaz Keeryo, and others. Addressing the ceremony, vice-chancellor Dr. Kalhoro said that as soon as admissions start in the BS (Artificial Intelligence) program, 20 candidates will be awarded scholarships based on merit, for which funds have been allocated.
He said that with the support of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad, the fourth instalment of the Benazir Ehsaas Scholarship for the students of the 2020 batch and the third and fourth instalments for the selected candidates of the 2021 batch will be released in December 2023, for which an amount of 43.4 million rupees has been received. He informed, that Sindh Educational Endowment Scholarship interviews will also be held in December for which 820 students have submitted applications.
According to him, 40 slots have been allotted for MPhil and PhD scholars under the Sindh indigenous scholarship this time, while each scholar will get 0.23 million rupees and the interviews for this scholarship will be held next week. The vice-chancellor noted that despite limited resources, provincial and federal governments were providing scholarships to the University of Sindh.
