ISLAMABAD – Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Ahmad Ishaque Jehangir has been removed from his position due to his failure to prevent illegal migration from the country.
The Establishment Division has issued a notification in this regard, stating that Jehangir has made as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD).
The notification was issued after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the decision to remove DG FIA from his post.
Reports said Jehangir was removed due to slow investigations into boat accidents, which have claimed of several Pakistanis.
The Establishment Division has started shortlisting candidates for the post. The Ministry of Interior will send a summary to the federal cabinet for approval of the new DG FIA.
PM Shehbaz has instructed that an experienced officer should be picked for the key post.
Recently, a passenger boat carrying illegal immigrants capsized near Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania in West Africa, claiming lives of 43 Pakistanis.
This incident on the Western Mediterranean route came just weeks after four other boats sank in the central Mediterranean in December 2024. As many as 50 people including 40 Pakistanis, were killed in these tragedies.
One of the deadliest shipwrecks was reported in the Mediterranean in June 2023, when more than 700 people, including nearly 300 Pakistanis, died their boat capsized near the Greek island of Pylos.
