Pakistan and other countries in the Northern Hemisphere are facing extreme chill, and tonight, December 21, marks the arrival of the winter solstice, bringing the longest night of the year.
The winter solstice, which occurs when the Earth’s tilt is farthest from the Sun, results in the shortest day and the longest night of the year.
Suparco spokesperson said the solstice signifies the peak cold winter season, with the North Pole being tilted furthest from the Sun, causing the Northern Hemisphere to experience fewer hours of daylight during this region.
For those in Pakistan, the solstice means the longest night of 2024 on Saturday, as the country lies within Northern Hemisphere. The event is also symbolic marker in history, traditionally representing the “death and rebirth” of the Sun, as daylight begins to gradually increase following the solstice.
In contrast, Summer solstice marks longest day of the year on June 21.
