ISLAMABAD – Pakistan army’s self-accountability is a rigorous, and automated process that continues, and is in the limelight after the arrest of Lieutenant General (retired) Faiz Hameed, the former Director-General (DG) of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
After the arrest of the country’s former spymaster, at least eight more have been held including three retired army officers, Army’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
As this development made headlines, local TV channels identified detained officers as Brigadier (r) Ghaffar, Brigadier (r) Naaem, and Colonel (r) Asim. The trio was involved in communication between Faiz Hameed, and a political party.
The TV channel report claimed that Brigadier retd. Ghaffar, Naeem and Colonel r Asim, are accused of mediating between the political party and the former ISI chief – who stepped down before change of command.
Earlier this week, Pakistan Army announced detention of Faiz Hameed who was taken into military custody, with the ISPR announcing that court-martial proceedings against him had commenced.
Faiz Hameed
Lieutenant General (r) Faiz Hameed is facing accusations of misusing power and raiding a private business while heading the the country’s apex intel agency. His arrest, which is highly unusual for an officer of his rank, has sparked speculation about connections to his close ties with political leader.
The military started Field General Court Martial process, and there are claims that the arrest could be part of a broader effort to enforce accountability. Analysts suggest it may also be linked to actions against those who supported a political party during May 9 riots.
