LAHORE – Authorities in Punjab’s capital are taking extreme steps to control record smog and in latest measures, Lahore Traffic Police banned heavy vehicles.
The metropolis with a population of around 1.35 crore has now been choking since late October as the air quality index has touched alarming numbers.
Lately, Lahore Traffic Police set up around dozen checkpoints at major entry and exit points. These checkpoints are aimed at ensuring only essential vehicles, such as those transporting fuel, medicine, food, or passengers, are allowed entry, after passing strict anti-smog inspections.
Over one thousand vehicles were also slapped with massive fine for causing air pollution. Dozens of smoke-emitting vehicles were impounded.
To bolster enforcement, AI-powered e-challan system is in action to automatically detect and fine violators. The system allows for real-time monitoring of smog-producing vehicles, ensuring that offenders are swiftly penalized. Traffic police continue public awareness campaigns.
Officials called for public cooperation, stressing that reducing air pollution requires a collective effort from all citizens as transporters are required to adhere to government’s anti-smog guidelines, highlighting the health benefits of cleaner air.
