ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari finalised the names of the governors for Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Balochistan in their meeting at the Prime Minister House, the sources privy to the development said on Saturday.
Since nothing has officially been released about the meeting, sources said that the prime minister and the PPP chairman approved three names.
Who are the three nominees and which political parties they belong to to ?
Sardar Saleem Haider:
Saleem Haider — a PPP loyalist — belongs to Punjab’s Attock district who also served as a former federal minister and prime minister’s aide for overseas Pakistanis in the previous tenure of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government.
Sardar Salim Haider was elected as a Member of the National Assembly from Attock in 2008 on the PPP ticket and served as the Foreign Minister in the cabinet of Prime Minsters Yousuf Raza Gilani and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.
Additionally, the politician is also the president of the Bilawal-led party’s Rawalpindi division.
Faisal Karim Kundi:
Faisal Karim Kundi had served as Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly from 2008 to 2013. He was also an Adviser to the Prime Minister in the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government.
Jaffar Khan Mandokhail:
Jaffar Khan Mandokhail, who is the president of PML-N Balochistan chapter, has claimed that his nomination has already been finalised and he will be appointed as the governor.
As the president of PML-N in Balochistan, he stated that he will play a bridging role between the province and the federal government for progress and prosperity.
What is for MQM-P in power sharing formula?
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) will retain the governorship of Sindh, with Kamran Tessori continuing in his role, as decided by the Prime Minister.
These appointments reflect the power-sharing arrangement between the PML-N and PPP, with each party securing key positions based on an agreed formula.
For instance, the PPP’s support for Shehbaz Sharif in the Prime Ministerial election was reciprocated with PML-N’s backing of Asif Zardari for the presidency. Despite speculations, the PPPP remains firm on not joining the federal cabinet post-budget, reiterating its stance against it.
