LAHORE – Sugar prices have witnessed a significant increase in Pakistan with the start of December 2024 despite the government’s claims of decline in inflation rate.
Reports said the ex-mill sugar price was increased by Rs10 per kilogram in past 20 days, adding that it has jacked up to Rs125 to Rs115 per kg.
However, small shopkeepers have jacked up the retail price of sugar by Rs15 per kg. It is now being sold for Rs140 per kg as compared to previous Rs125 per kg.
Sugar dealers said it is unusual for sugar prices to rise during crushing season which is ongoing these days.
They claimed that an artificial shortage is being created by spreading rumors about a reduction in sugar production compared to last year.
They further stated that the government had allowed the export of 790,000 tons of sugar, of which 377,000 tons have already been exported.
In the last two weeks of November, the daily production from crushing was only 13,000 tons, while the country’s daily consumption is 18,000 to 20,000 tons.
