The Cultural Department of Karachi has launched a decisive crackdown against a mafia involved in the unauthorized cutting down of banyan trees, some of which hold historical significance. The department issued a formal letter, highlighting that unidentified individuals have been removing ancient banyan trees from areas including Clifton, particularly outside Jess and Mary School, during daylight hours.
Mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, swiftly responded to the situation by sending a message to the Inspector General (IG) of Police, urging law enforcement to file cases against those responsible for the tree-cutting activities. Emphasizing the need for prompt action, Wahab stated, “The police are responsible for this action. The KMC has intervened to put a stop to it.”
Furthermore, Mayor Wahab shared that a video capturing the illegal tree-cutting has been forwarded to the IG for necessary actions against the culprits. The mayor also acknowledged Ali Manzoor, who initially brought the matter to his attention, and assured that steps were being taken to address the issue.
