South Africa trounced New Zealand by 198 runs to level the series at 1-1 in the second test match played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

The Proteas maintained their unbeaten series record over New Zealand with the win while becoming the first team to win a match at the Hagley Oval after choosing to bat first.

A target of 426 proved too much for the Blackcaps as they were bowled out for 227 on the final day after resuming on 94-4. Devon Conway and Tom Blundell started the morning positively with 33 runs in the first eight overs of the day.

Lutho Sipamla dented New Zealand’s chances significantly trapping Conway LBW on 92. Blundell and de Grandhomme managed to New Zealand to lunch without further loss but could not add much to the score in the following session.

Marco Jensen had both of them caught through short balls before removing Kyle Jameison as well. Tim Southee soon fell victim to another short ball by Rabada, lobbing a simple chance that was snapped by Sipamla. Rain interrupted the proceedings with early tea being taken but Maharaj trapped Henry lbw after resumption to complete a memorable win.

South Africa had dominated the match from the very first day. A first-century from Sarel Erwee and a dominant bowling effort led by Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jensen ensured a 71 run first-innings lead over the hosts on a tricky pitch.

Kyle Verreynne then struck South Africa’s second ton of the match while a rearguard 47 from Kagiso Rabada set a record 426 runs total for New Zealand to chase.

South Africa, New Zealand will take on Bangladesh and Australia respectively for their next assignments.
