A soldier of the Pakistan Army was martyred on Sunday when terrorists from inside Afghanistan across the international border opened fire on a military post in Hassan Khel Sector in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan district, the military said in a statement.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations, Pakistani troops responded in a befitting manner. However, during the exchange of fire, 32-year-old Assistant Lance Daffadar Waqar Ali, resident of Chota Lahore, Swabi, embraced martyrdom.

The ISPR said that Pakistan has consistently been requesting Afghanistan to ensure effective border management. “Pakistan strongly condemns the use of Afghan soil by terrorists for activities against Pakistan,” the statement added.

The military’s media wing further said that the army is determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen the resolve.

Earlier this month, two soldiers embraced martyrdom, while three terrorists were killed in an exchange of fire in the North Waziristan district, while four terrorists were killed a separate encounter in the Tank district, the military said in separate statements.

The soldiers were martyred when their convoy came under attack in the Hassan Khel area, ISPR had said. “Own troops initiated a prompt response, effectively engaged and killed three terrorists,” the ISPR added.

During the intense exchange of fire, it said, Lance Naik Muhammad Pannah of Pakistan Army, 30, a resident of Jaffarabad district and Sepoy Shamas Ullah of Frontier Constabulary, 36, a resident of South Waziristan, “having fought gallantly, embraced Shahadat”.

“Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the terrorists,” the ISPR said, adding that the dead terrorists were involved in terror activities against security forces. “Sanitisation of the area is being carried out to eliminate any other terrorists found in the area.”

The ISPR, the media wing of the military, said in a separate statement that at least four terrorists were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces in the near Ranwal in the Tank district.

The security forces “observed and engaged” the terrorists, the ISPR said, adding that security forces also recovered arms and ammunition from those killed. The killed terrorists were involved in target killings, kidnapping and extortion in the area, the statement added.
