Solar Power Tax in Pakistan: Power Division’s latest update clears confusion

ISLAMABAD – The reports of taxation on solar panels for residential or commercial purposes shocked everyone but now the government has responded to these reports.

Amid the contrasting reports, Power Division turned down reports about fixed tax on solar power. calling it misleading.

Power Division clarified that no official proposal has been submitted to the federal government for the imposition of a fixed tax on solar power. It also mentioned currently subsidy of Rs 1.90 per unit is burdening around 30 million underprivileged consumers.

It said if this subsidy continues, these consumers may face an additional burden of at least Rs 3.35 per unit. The Division said the growing trend in solar panels was aimed to promote alternative energy sources.

Power Division further clarified that government is evaluating system and considering amendments to protect the poor from further financial strain.

Earlier, there were reports that power agency asked government to receive Rs2,000 per kilowatt tax from those who have installed solar setup with 12kw or above capacity.

It also claimed that 12-kilowatt panels would pay Rs.24,000 in tax if the proposal is accepted by the federal government.
