A petition has been filed with the Supreme Court seeking the removal of Dr Arif Alvi as president of Pakistan.
The petition was filed by Ghulam Murtaza under Section 3 of Article 184 of the Constitution. Both the president and Law Ministry have been made parties in the petition. The petitioner argues that Dr Arif Alvi misused his powers as the president and insulted the office of the president.
The petitioner maintained that the president was also guilty of illegally dissolving the assembly. He contends that Dr Arif Alvi did not ensure the implementation of the Constitution under Article 5 of the Constitution.
Dr Alvi has been criticised by his own party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), following the May 9 incidents, while several politicos and the SC have also censured the top official over his failure to announce the date of elections.
His five-year term ended on September 8, 2023, however, he is currently continuing as the country’s head of state under Article 44 of the Constitution which allows the president to continue holding the office in the absence of the provincial and national assemblies — which were dissolved in January and August earlier this year, respectively.
