Right to Information’ plays key role in country’s development: Governor

The Governor Punjab Engineer Baleegh ur Rehman on Wednesday said that concrete news and substantial public opinion not only help to improve the performance of public institutions but also play role in the achievement of good governance.

He was of the view that in Pakistan Right to Information played a vital role in the implementation of the Rule of Law in the country. He expressed these views while addressing the participants of International Right to Know Day 2022 celebrated at the Governor House, Awards were presented to the RTI Champions in Punjab 28 September 2022, Lahore.

On the International Right to Know day 20202, Punjab Information Commission in collaboration with Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) organized an event at the Governor House Lahore. The Governor Punjab Engineer Baleegh ur Rehman was the chief guest at the occasion. Punjab RTI Champion Awards 2022 were presented to the active practitioners, academia, PIOs, and Journalists for their role in effectively using and disseminating the information under the law.

UNESCO declared 28 September as International Day for Universal Access to Information. Considering that several civil society organizations and government bodies in the world have adopted and currently celebrate this observance, the UN General Assembly also adopted 28 September 2019 as the International Day for Universal Access to Information.

Mehboob Qadir Shah, Chief Information Commissioner said The Punjab Transparency and Right to Information Act were passed by the Punjab Assembly in December 2013. The main objective of this Act is: “To enforce the fundamental right of access to information in all matters of public importance”. The Punjab Information Commission was established under this act. Its roles include disposal of RTI Appeals filed against the orders of PIOs, launching an RTI awareness campaign throughout the province, imparting training to PIOs, framing mechanisms for public bodies and the Commission to implement the law, and framing annual reports.
