Indian leading industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata passed away at 86, Tata Group announced. The scion of one of leading business families died after receiving intensive care in hospital in Maharastra.

Tata got top accolades including India’s second-highest civilian award, for his exceptional contributions to trade and industry. His death marks the end of an era for the Tata Group and Indian business as a whole

Ratan started began his illustrious career with the family business in 1962, and over a period of 2 decades at India’s largest conglomerate. Under Tata’s leadership, the group made several high-profile acquisitions, including Tetley and Corus. His net worth was said to be around 3,800 Indian INR, positioning him at 421st richest person.

The deceased was famous for his modest lifestyle and philanthropic efforts. He was born into a Parsi Zoroastrian family, and studied architecture at Cornell University.

One of his leading projects is Tata Nano to make cars more affordable for average Indians. Beyond his corporate achievements, he was a major investor in startups and a leading philanthropist, supporting education, healthcare, and rural development.
