In the last two years, the Punjab government has made 370 officers redundant and it is paying them millions of rupees in the form of their remunerations for doing nothing.
As many as 370 officers of BS 17-21 were made Officers on Special Duty and they were given millions of rupees in their salaries.
The matter came to light during scrutiny of the service files of the officers in the fiscal year 2021-22.
It has been revealed that the most important posts have remained vacant, while millions of rupees are being paid to the bureaucrats in the form of salaries without posting.
The bureaucrats have been made OSDs due to political liking and disliking or due to the displeasure of higher authorities.
However, 370 OSDs continued receiving their salaries and benefits while sitting idle at their homes. A large number of officers in Punjab are still OSDs.
Services Department was of the view that all officers were made OSDs on the instructions of the competent authority. These OSDs are also drawing civil secretariat executive allowance.
