LAHORE – The Punjab government has decided to set the minimum employment age at 16 years to discourage child labour.

In a meeting chaired by Punjab Labour Minister Faisal Ayub Khokhar, it was also decided to establish a special task force for the implementation of a minimum wage of Rs37,000.

He stated that it would be ensured that wages for workers will be transferred through bank accounts, adding that a complaints cell has been set up within the Labor Department to address issues promptly.

Khokhar mentioned that efforts will be made to encourage the formation of labour unions and the right to association. Employment agencies will be brought under labour laws to protect workers’ rights.

He further announced that strict actions will be taken against child labour across Punjab, and the minimum employment age will be set at 16 years.

As per existing law under Section 3 of Article 11 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the minimum age for employment is 14 years.
