ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday challenged the Election Act Amendment Bill in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan filed a constitutional petition against the Election Act Amendment Bill in the Supreme Court.
PTI, through Salman Akram Raja, filed a petition under Article 184/3 in the Supreme Court, and sought annulment of the Election Act Amendment Bill.
The National Assembly passed the Election Act Amendment Bill by a majority vote amid strong protests and uproar from the opposition on Tuesday.
The National Assembly session was chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, during which the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs presented the committee’s report on the Election Act Amendment Bill.
The Election Act Amendment Bill was then presented for approval in the National Assembly along with a motion to consider the Election Act Amendment Bill, which was also approved by the house.
After the National Assembly, the Senate also passed the Election Act Amendment Bill by a majority vote.
On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and other opposition parties rejected the Election Act 2024 Amendment Bill and announced their intention to challenge it in court.
