Amid the plethora of taxes, people in Punjab are set to pay another tax dubbed ‘professional tax’ as the provincial government made amendment in Punjab Finance Act of 1977.
The government’s new move causes widespread concern among residents across the region, as people are already paying hefty taxes on utility bills and for other services.

The professional tax will be deducted from employees’ salaries in several sectors, as it will add to woes of workers.
With the latest trends, Punjab government is facing criticism for imposing this additional burden on vulnerable individuals. The amendment to 1977 Act, prompted by ruling from Lahore High Court, mandates that all companies in the province withhold this professional tax from their employees’ wages and remit it to the government.
It has been learnt that companies are now responsible to deduct professional tax from salaries. Companies that fail to adhere to these requirements will face action from provincial administration.
The implementation of this tax further heightened concerns about its financial impact on workers, as people are bearing brunt of back-breaking inflation.
