Senior politician Pervez Khattak has resigned as chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians (PTI-P) citing health reasons, his party said on Saturday.

Khattak was a close aide of Imran Khan who quit PTI and formed the party offshoot, but the former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister faced an upsetting defeat in the recently held election.

Following the election blow, Khattak, 74, bids adieu to membership of PTI-P membership saying that party leader Mehmood Khan will remain acting chairman till the election of a new party chairman.

Khattak said, “It is with a heavy heart that he is tendering his resignation from the position of party chairman and membership, due to serious health issues”.

He called it a difficult decision, but said he must step down from the responsibilities. Over the past year, it has been an honor and a prestige to serve as a party chairman. However due to health reason I find myself unable to fulfill the duties and obligations of this rule to the best of my abilities, the letter reads.

He thanked party workers for their support and cooperation, and said party will continue to thrive under new leadership.

Khattak loses Nowshera’s NA-33 seat
