ISLAMABAD – Internet speed in Pakistan has started recovering weeks after disruption as the government pinned blame on users for the slowdown.

Amid the outcry and viral trends, internet speeds in Pakistan have been gradually improving from Monday. Authorities seem to offer some relief to millions of internet users, cooperate sector and freelancers.

As government brushed the issue of slow internet under the carpet, the actual cause remains disputed. Activists believe government is constructing a firewall similar to autocratic states to increase control over online spaces.

‘Slow Internet in Pakistan’

The government however turned down this claim, instead blaming widespread use of VPNs for putting a strain on the network and causing the slowdowns.

Such slowdown and disruption are widely used to suppress dissent amid protests. Last year, Pakistani government restricted social media platforms and deliberately slowed internet speeds as the political struggle extended into the digital realm.

For months, social platform X has been blocked since February elections due to concerns over national security.

Will VPNs be blocked soon in Pakistan?
