Intimate relationships between staff members and students are generally discouraged in wake of exploitation, and conflicts of interest, and such scenarios in educational institutions could create perception of favoritism and will disrupt educational activities.

To rule out any scandals and harassment, Khyber Medical University has slapped a ban on personal relationships between faculty members and students.

The move was taken on stern directives issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to deal with harassment on campuses. In a notification, chairperson of KMU harassment inquiry committee, warned of strict action including dismissal, suspension, expulsion, disciplinary probation, fines, degree withholding, professional license cancellation, the inclusion of decision in a personal file, and other related sanctions.

It said that such intimate relationships pose conflicts of interest, compromise professional judgment, and risk the credibility of the university.

Lately, the violations of policy led to the expulsion of a Grade-18 staff member, along with written reprimands, fines, and demotions for another Grade-17 staff member. Furthermore, several other senior staff members also received final warnings and are currently under surveillance. KMU officials urged faculty members to spread the word.
