Jam Kamal inaugurates flagship exhibition alongside CM Murad, Governor KPK
Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, voiced optimism on Wednesday that Pakistan’s textiles and leather industries are set to become more competitive and resilient through joint efforts from both the public and private sectors. Speaking at the inauguration of the fifth International Textiles and Leather Flagship Exhibition (TEXPO) at the Expo Center in Karachi, Khan expressed confidence in the industry’s bright future.
The event, running from October 23 to 25, was inaugurated digitally by Khan, alongside Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Kareem Kundi, and Chairman of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), ZubairMotiwala. Khan described TEXPO as an opportunity to build stronger relationships and form new partnerships to drive mutual growth. He highlighted the government’s collaboration with the private sector to promote value-added products and diversification, particularly in non-cotton apparel, activewear, and high-fashion leather accessories. He also emphasized the importance of adopting sustainable practices and smart materials in manufacturing.
“We are working closely with the private sector to promote value addition and product diversification, particularly in non-cotton apparel, performance/active wears, technical textiles, and high-fashion shoes,” Khan said. “Our focus is on enhancing design capabilities and creating high-end products that can compete internationally.”
Khan added that the Ministry of Commerce is supporting businesses through the Export Development Fund (EDF), providing financial assistance for trade promotion, marketing, infrastructure development, and skills enhancement. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment, encouraging investments in new technologies, and supporting exporters in accessing global markets. The minister also pointed to the role of digital transformation in revolutionizing supply chains and e-commerce, positioning Pakistan as a leader in environmentally responsible manufacturing. “Pakistan is embracing trends like digital transformation in supply chains and e-commerce, which are unlocking new growth opportunities,” he noted. TEXPO 2024 has attracted delegates from over 52 countries, showcasing Pakistan’s essential role in the global textile and leather industries. Khan welcomed the international participants, stating,
“The presence of foreign delegates symbolizes Pakistan’s crucial position in the global market and our commitment to sustainable growth in these sectors.” Over the three-day event, attendees will witness cutting-edge innovations and explore Pakistan’s world-class products. The exhibition offers opportunities to engage with industry leaders and form new business partnerships. Khan also highlighted the vital contribution of textiles and leather to Pakistan’s economy, which accounts for more than 60% of national exports. The sector has thrived due to the availability of skilled labor and local resources, providing a competitive edge. He noted that Pakistan has consistently expanded its product range, leading to increased export volumes and improved labor absorption.
“Pakistan now offers a vast array of products, including high-quality apparel, technical textiles, and specialized fabrics,” Khan stated. “However, there remains significant room for growth and expansion.” Khan emphasized Pakistan’s advancements in synthetic and blended materials, noting the country’s growing capacity to produce a wide range of man-made fibers, intermediates, and finished goods. He projected further growth in this area, driven by international demand.
The minister acknowledged the challenges facing the textiles and leather sectors, including economic uncertainty, rising raw material costs, and fluctuating energy prices.
