ISLAMABAD – The federal government has approved a summary to end the proscribed status of the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), days after an undisclosed agreement with the religio-political party, media reports said on Saturday.
The summary was sent by the Punjab government to the Ministry of Interior after Chief Minister Usman Buzdar’s cabinet approved it.
The interior ministry later forwarded the Punjab government’s recommendation to the federal cabinet, which has given a green light to it.
Earlier in the day, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore granted bail to several leaders of TLP on in several cases registered against them following the violent protests.
The court directed all the TLP leaders to submit bail bonds of Rs100,000 each.
ATC Judge Ijaz Ahmed Butter and Judge Hussain Bhutta conducted hearing of more than 20 cases, which have been clubbed together.
Police had registered cases against the TLP leaders at different police stations in Lahore after at least three policemen were martyred in violent protests in the provincial capital last month.
The TLP had launched the latest round of protests in Lahore last month, demanding the release of its chief, Hafiz Saad Hussain Rizvi, the son of its late founder Khadim Rizvi. Police had arrested Saad Rizvi in April this year for “maintenance of public order”.
After three days of violent protests in Lahore, the TLP started a long march to Islamabad on Oct 22 to put pressure on the government.
Later, the federal government approached TLP leadership through a committee and managed to reach an agreement, which has not been disclosed so far.
