ISLAMABAD – Pakistan embassy in Khartoum came under fire as the armed forces and powerful rival paramilitary unleashed heavy weapons in urban areas while the casualties tally rose to nearly 300 and thousand injured.
A statement issued by the Pakistani embassy in North African states said it was hit by three bullets during the ongoing skirmishes, amid fear of full-scale civil war in crisis hit Sudan. The embassy called it a blatant violation of the Vienna Convention, calling on the host government to provide security to diplomatic missions.
It further called on Sudanese authorities to deploy security personnel for the protection and security of the Embassy of Pakistan at the earliest.
Amid the war-like situation, Pakistani embassy cautioned all nationals to stay at home and avoid unnecessary outgoings due to the deteriorating security situation.
The recent development comes as many foreign diplomats come under attack in Sudan after clashes broke out. European Union envoy in Sudan, Aidan O’Hara, head of the EU humanitarian operation were assaulted at residence in Khartoum while a US diplomatic convoy also came under fire on the same day.
Thousands of residents fled Sudan’s capital where witnesses reported bodies in the street from fighting between the army and paramilitaries that embassies said killed more than 270 civilians.
The brutal fights between Sudanese general and armies are for control over the country, with the conflict raging on despite a planned 24-hour ceasefire. Khartoum and adjourning cities turned into a battlefield in the power struggle between Gen Dagalo and Gen Burhan.
