DHAKA – Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday declared Bangladesh as a free country following the end of Sheikh Hasina Wazed’s rule.

In an interview, Dr. Yunus stated that with the removal of Sheikh Hasina Wazed and the ongoing violence in the country, Bangladesh is now a sovereign nation.

He compared Hasina’s governance to an occupation force, describing her as a dictator and military general who sought control over everything. He added that now every citizen of Bangladesh feels liberated.

Dr. Yunus commented that the violence and protests by demonstrators were expressions of anger against Sheikh Hasina. He expressed hope that the young people who toppled Hasina’s government will now lead the country in the right direction.

According to media reports, Sheikh Hasina’s government had filed 190 cases against Dr. Yunus, who is currently out on bail.

Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s administration, Bangladeshi students have rejected the idea of military rule and are calling for the formation of an interim government led by Dr. Yunus.
