KARACHI –   National Test team captain Shan Masood stated that while making changes to the team after a defeat is easy, backing the players is essential for moving forward.

In a press conference, Masood remarked that playing for the Pakistan team is both an honor and a significant responsibility, requiring attention to both short-term and long-term considerations. He emphasized that the pressure of responsibility is substantial, but it has never affected his performance negatively.

He highlighted the importance of the upcoming series against England, noting that the results from the recent series against Bangladesh were not favorable. Despite several opportunities to gain an advantage against Bangladesh, the team failed to capitalize on them.

Masood stressed the importance of backing players to build a strong team, saying, “It’s easy to make changes after a defeat, but to move forward, we must support the players. They regret the losses and are eager to achieve better results.”

He mentioned that preparations for the Champions One Day Cup have been good, and fitness levels have improved. As captain, he expressed disappointment when the team loses, acknowledging that it’s not an ideal start and that accountability comes into play. He admitted that the team made several mistakes against Bangladesh that need to be learned from and emphasized the need to improve both mental and physical fitness for red-ball cricket, aiming to match the fitness of other top teams.

Masood noted that Aamer Jamal is returning from injury, and the team has been formed for the current Test based on player fitness. He stated that after Mohammad Rizwan, Sarfaraz Ahmed is the next available wicketkeeper and is ready to play immediately. The long-term strategy for younger wicketkeepers is also being implemented, and they are working on both wicket-keeping and opening.

Regarding Babar Azam, he stated that Babar is one of the world’s top batters and is not out of form. While Babar is making good starts, Masood emphasized the need to back not just him but all players. Kamran Ghulam is part of their plans, and he wants to give every player ample time to prove themselves. He also mentioned that Zahid Mahmood will be included in the team if needed.

Masood acknowledged that they did not play well in 2024 and emphasized the importance of supporting players. He expressed that it would bring him joy if his backing helps any player regain form, stating he would not mind sacrificing his position if it benefits the team. He is committed to making honest and fair decisions for the peace of mind that comes with it, reiterating that these are players from their own country, not from elsewhere.

He remarked that fast bowlers must always remain super-fit, and their workload is managed carefully. He conveyed to the fast bowlers that they should be in top shape and had been in constant communication with them. In cricket, adapting to the situation is crucial, but fast bowlers typically perform better in Test cricket.

Reflecting on his own performance, Shan Masood said, “When only one run is needed, I make that one run. I also need to play long innings with quick runs.”
