LAHORE –  Outgoing Punjab Assembly Speaker Sibtain Khan on Friday administered oath to newly elected members of the provincial assembly.

Maryam Nawaz, the PML-N nominee for Punjab chief minister, who was spotted in the first row of the lawmakers, also took oath as member of the provincial assembly.

The assembly session started two hours late from the schedule time 10:00 am.

After the oath taking ceremony, the election of the speaker and the deputy speaker will be conducted on Saturday (tomorrow)

The speaker congratulated the newly members for taking oath and prayed for their positive role for the service of Punjab and its people.

He mentioned that the collection and scrutiny of nomination papers for speaker and deputy speaker would take place today.

This marked the inaugural provincial assembly session subsequent to the general elections held on February 8, where the newly-elected members took their oaths.

At the onset of the belated session, members from various political parties including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) engaged in slogan-chanting and exchanged heated remarks.

According to the reports, Imtiaz Sheikh reached there secretely in a vehicle with tinted windows. He was sitting on the rear seat to avoid any trouble while entering the premises.

The SIC, currently comprising 97 members within the premises, alleged that their entry into the assembly was being obstructed.
