A four-day international workshop titled: “Metagenomics-based Approach for Viral Disease Surveillance” was inaugurated at COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI).

The event marks a collaborative endeavor by the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Trieste, Italy, and CUI – a COMSATS Centre of Excellence in Pakistan.

Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Minister for Science and Technology of Pakistan, the Chief Guest, in his inaugural address emphasized the critical need for a robust viral disease surveillance system, noting that such systems are essential for detecting emerging viruses and enabling timely interventions, safeguarding the nation’s economic and social progress.

Dr. Emanuele Buratti, Scientific Coordinator at ICGEB, in his address highlighted ICGEB’s commitment to advancing scientific research in biological sciences, with a particular focus on fostering innovation in low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Buratti lauded COMSATS for organizing this impactful event under the ICGEB Meetings and Courses Program 2024.
