Marseille finally landed a body blow to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) eliminating their bitter rivals from the French Cup in the round of 16 at home.

Alexis Sanchez and Ruslan Malinovskyi managed to score on either side of a Sergio Ramos equaliser as the hosts defeated the Parisians for just the third time since the takeover from Qatari owners in 2011.

PSG, who have now lost three times already in 2023, started slowly once against but were finally made to pay for their mistakes against a lively Marseille side.

Without the injured Kylian Mbappe, the visitors failed to create anything in the opening stages before Marseille were rewarded for their efforts. Ramos brought down Cengiz Under inside the penalty box before Sanchez beat Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 31st minute.

The former Spanish international made up for his mistake by scoring their equaliser in the second minute of added time as the teams went into the break level on the scoresheet.

Malinovskyi sent the home crowd into raptures when he unleashed a vicious volley past Donnarumma in the 57th minute to restore his side’s lead.

Ramos again seemingly equalised in the added time of the second half but his effort was ruled out for offside before Marseille defended for their lives in the last stages but hung on for a famous win.

The defeat to Marseille in the French Cup may not be the end of troubles for PSG as they will soon face Bayern Munich in the Champions League just as they are rounding into form.

With PSG’s trigger-happy owners waiting in the wings, a lone Ligue 1 title may not be enough to save Christophe Galtier’s job.
